Also, this shit did the whole pop stars are fake schtick two years before Perfect Blue.
![]() ![]() A love triangle, aerial combat, music being vital to the story and worldbuilding, and like every other Macross series this takes those beats and crafts its own unique story around them. What makes Macross such an amazing anime is the level of depth and development. Anno saw her and made her the angel of death, Kon saw her and basically based his entire career off of it, culminating in Paprika where she becomes the superhero she always deserved to be. By themselves is not much but, mix them together add a quality score and amazing action set-pieces, you get a damn entertaining film. I might have a small bias with Macross Plus (), after all I was raise watching Robotech when I was a child, so anything with the YF fighters has my complete attention. Macross Plus walks very common territory, but is how the directors showed the material that makes the difference, the film has no dull moments and that says something when a film is 2 hours and 30 minutes long and it doesnt feel like it. Yoko Kanno (known for her work on Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, and much more) really brings out the vibrant atmosphere with a soundtrack blending pop and synth sounds. This post- Gunbuster (aka Aim for the Top ) blockbuster pretty much invented the whole virtual idol concept, too, and even inspired Neuromancer author William Gibson to. Its still two pilots, one hot, one cold, competing for attention and a shared childhood love with a fun, deeper plot and a good, slow reveal twist. Planes that turn into robos. Sadness. Love triangles. ![]() One who cast it aside, one who struggled to face it, one who ran away from it. Part of the hit epic mecha franchise Super Dimensional Fortress Macross - also known in the west as Robotech - this story focuses on two pilots - one human, one half-Zentradi - with grudges against one another due to a past and close relationship with a woman whos a celebrity pop singer whos the voice and brainwaves (yes) behind an A.I. Sharon Apple. For comparisons to Hollywood flicks around the 80s90s era, its like the MacrossRobotech version of Top Gun, competing fighter pilots flying badass fighter jets that turn into robots and back upon activation with a love triangle and drama involved as well as about overcoming past differences, set to an awesome and beautiful score and songs by animes greatest gift to the world; Yoko Kanno ( Cowboy Bebop, Wolfs Rain, GitS: Stand Alone Complex, Vision of Escaflowne ). This review is mostly for the movie edition which I feel is superior, but I will be comparing them both. As much as I enjoyed the original Macross series and loved the summary film, I had several problems with it. The characters are extremely weak and the love triangle, by extension, feels uninspired and tacked on. Its themes are very strong, but the whole series has an immature feeling to it like its message was intended for children, contrary to what much of the content implies. The story is emotionally mature and the main three characters. The CG is dated now, but in its day Macross Pluss visuals were jaw-dropping. Theres a couple plot holes but you probably wont notice cuz your busy nomming on eye candy.
